Missing it on Steve Jobs

The emotional response to Steve Jobs’s death has caught me totally off guard. I don’t get it — a little worrying considering this is what I’m supposed to be good at.

Aside from big Apple announcements, we hardly knew him. It’s sad that he died at 56, but I’m confused by the emotional response to his death.

I said as much on my Facebook wall and I was surprised to see friends who disagreed. Some of their responses:

  • “I think that it’s a response to how fiercely he lived his life and to the personal nature of his company’s signature creations, devices that smiled at us, spoke to us, enabled us to keep our friends, families and most treasured valuables (music, photos, videos) close.”
  • It seems to me that folks are more celebrating/reflecting on all the game-changing stuff Jobs churned out in his 56 years. Pretty damn impressive, no?”
  • “I think the most simplistic way to state it is that your life (eveyone’s lives) would be completely different today had he not lived. So even though you and most everyone else didn’t know him, he touched everyone in some way shape or form.”

And then a few who agreed with me:

  • Seriously. I’m really utilizing the Facebook “unsubscribe” button for anyone who post his quotes…it’s a passive aggressive way to defriend.”
